KOMANSÉ Dance Theater Mission:
KOMANSÉ Dance Theater’s mission is to use art to challenge, create, and cultivate. The company utilizes the medium of Black cultural expression to unpack current issues surrounding social activism. Artistic Director, Raianna Brown, seeks to create work that speaks to people’s experiences and the universal human connection. KOMANSÉ Dance Theater is uncompromising storytelling for the culture.
Raianna Brown’s work has been described as powerful, groundbreaking, innovative, empowering, and genius. A heartfelt dance artist adept in a range of styles including ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, and modern, Raianna Brown crafts movement that is thoughtful and cutting edge.
An Atlanta native, Raianna began studying dance at the Spelman Summer Dance Institute in her youth and went on to further her training at Price Performing Arts Center. Since then, she has trained throughout the country with world renowned companies such as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in New York and Alonzo King Lines Ballet in San Francisco.
Raianna’s work has been commissioned by notable local organizations such as City Gate Dance Theater and Dare Dream Dance. In 2015, she took her work abroad as a guest choreographer with StaibDance Company in Sorrento, Italy. Soon after, she became the youngest choreographer to be selected to present work in the Dance Canvas ‘Introducing the Next Generation’ performance series. Throughout her career, Raianna has had the pleasure of working with prominent artists such as Rennie Harris, George Staib, Earl Mosley, Gregory Sinacori, Chloe Arnold, Jason Samuel Smith, T. Lang, Galen Hooks and Otis Sallid, among others.
Raianna is currently enrolled at the Georgia Institute of Technology as an Industrial Engineering major and dual-enrolled at Emory University studying with their dance program. In addition to working towards her Bachelor’s degree, Raianna continues to hone her craft and further her promising career through her work in the Atlanta dance community and beyond.
Last year Raianna made her directorial debut serving as the Artistic Director for “RAIIN Dance Theater presents: in Human”. The show was well received by a sold out audience and she can’t wait to continue her work as an Artistic Director with Komansé Dance Theater.
